Critical: How to Receive Your Heavy Freight

Do not let the delivery driver rush you. You have total legal right to inspect your freight before signing the Bill of Lading (BOL).

    Count the Pieces

    Confirm the physical pallet count matches the quantity written on the driver's delivery receipt.

    Inspect the Shrinkwrap

    Look for torn black plastic, crushed cardboard, or boot prints. Carriers will sometimes double-stack un-stackable freight and crush the bottom pallet.

    Note Damage ON THE PAPER

    If you see a single scuff or tear, write "FREIGHT DAMAGED / SUBJECT TO INSPECTION" clearly on the driver's paper before you sign your name.

Understanding Industrial LTL Transit

Rule 1 I got my tracking number, but Saia's website says "No Shipment Found."

The Reality: We issue your PRO number the moment the pallet is strapped on our staging floor. However, tracking does not go live until the carrier's line-haul tractor picks up the pallet and physically scans it across the local outbound terminal dock (usually between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM local time).

Rule 2 Why do commercial drops take 2 days and residential drops take 4 days?

The Reality: Motor freight carriers will not drive a 53-foot semi-truck into a residential neighborhood without calling the consignee (buyer) 24 hours in advance to schedule a delivery window.

Rule 3 What is the liftgate requirement?

The Reality: LTL freight arrives on a 4-foot dock-height trailer. If your jobsite does not have a loading dock, a forklift, or a loader with forks to pull the 1,500-lb pallet off the tail, your delivery must be flagged for Liftgate Service.

Rule 4 Can I pick up my freight at the terminal?

The Reality: If your pallet is sitting at the carrier's destination terminal in your city, but the final delivery truck isn't scheduled to drop it at your jobsite until tomorrow afternoon, you can go get it. Call our logistics desk — we will issue a formal Terminal Intercept authorizing you to drive your trailer directly to the carrier's freight yard and pick it up off their dock.
